Positive Behaviour Support Strategies for Children and Adolescents with Aggressive Behaviour is a self-paced online course that will equip you with a toolkit of practical strategies to develop a context that better supports children and adolescents with aggressive or violent behaviour and has a positive impact on everyone.

Through this tailored online training, you will be able to help your child achieve better communication, social, emotional, behavioural and learning outcomes while managing challenging behaviour. You’ll also learn a range of behaviour management strategies to effectively respond with deeper understanding to challenging behaviour and develop a prevention plan by better understanding aggressive behaviour.

Learning Objectives

(By the end of the course, you will be able to:)

Knowledge

  • Define aggressive behaviour and describe its various presentations (verbal aggression, physical aggression, property damage, self-directed aggression) across childhood and adolescence.
  • Understand the neurological, developmental, sensory, emotional, and environmental factors that contribute to aggressive behaviour, including overload, unmet needs, communication challenges, trauma, and difficulties with regulation.
  • Explain how aggressive behaviour functions as communication, signalling distress, overwhelm, or a need for safety, predictability, or connection.
  • Recognise how aggression impacts learning, relationships, participation, and emotional wellbeing across home, school, and community settings.
  • Describe the core principles of Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) and how they guide neuroaffirming, trauma-informed, strength-based approaches to assessment, response, and prevention of aggressive behaviour.

Skills

  • Apply the Assess–Manage–Prevent cycle to identify patterns, triggers, early warning signs, and the underlying functions of aggressive behaviour.
  • Conduct or contribute to a Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA) to identify antecedents, maintaining consequences, environmental stressors, and skill-building needs.
  • Develop and implement Behaviour Prevention and Behaviour Response Plans that support regulation, reduce triggers, teach adaptive coping skills, and keep everyone safe.
  • Teach, model, and reinforce replacement skills, including emotional regulation, communication, problem-solving, frustration tolerance, and safe ways to express needs.
  • Collaborate effectively with caregivers, teachers, support workers, and allied health professionals to ensure consistent implementation, monitor progress, and celebrate growth.

This course will equip you with a toolkit of practical strategies to help children and adolescents with aggressive behaviour strengthen their communication, social, emotional, behavioural, and learning skills, while supporting them to manage their behaviours in safer and more adaptive ways.

Hi there, I’m Dolly Bhargava,

I completed a Bachelor of Applied Science in Speech Pathology from the University of Sydney and a Master of Special Education from the University of Newcastle.

Midway through my career I realised my passion was in supporting children, adolescents and adults with emotional and behavioural difficulties (EBD). So I started working extensively with individuals with EBD in a variety of settings such as family homes, childcare centres, schools, respite care, post school options, employment services and corrective services as part of my role as a NDIS Registered Specialist Behaviour Support Practitioner and Speech Pathologist.

I have created this online course to equip parents, childcare staff, teachers, youth and allied health professionals with the knowledge, skills and tools to transform the lives of the individuals they support.

This online course is based on the practical wisdom I have gathered from working with individuals with EBD, their families and incredible staff over the last 25 years. I hope this course EDUCATES - EMPOWERS - ENABLES you to continue supporting the individual reach their full potential.

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR:

Parents and carers

Childcare workers

Preschool educators

Primary and secondary teachers

Teachers assistants

Disability support staff

Youth workers

Behaviour Support Practitioners

Allied health professionals

Wow, I loved these lectures. So many people assume that kids are just being naughty when they act aggressively, but in fact, there is so much going on in the brain. More awareness and less judgement can only be a good thing.

Shonda - Childcare worker

As teachers, we are aware of the challenges that young people face in their everyday lives. We know that children can not reach their full potential if their basic needs are not met. However, we do not always know which of our students are living in environments that damage, rather than foster healthy physical or mental health. Statistics are telling us that too many young people are coming to school hungry or hurt. The classroom must be a haven for all students. A place where they feel valued, supported and authentically cared for. Thank you for this course. Its helped me learn how to create and foster an environment so that students are free to grow, both academically and socially.

Mildred, Middle school teacher

"What I really liked about the course was learning about how to identify the causes of aggressive behaviours, how to address them and build a positive relationship with the student."
